Ookla has released its analysis of mobile and Wi-Fi performance at 48 major airports worldwide, based on Speedtest Intelligence data from Q1 2025. The study highlights that only three airports—Phoenix Sky Harbor International in the US, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International in China, and Toronto Pearson International in Canada—met the 100/20 Mbps benchmark for both mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The analysis shows that mobile performance in the Asia-Pacific region was particularly strong, with several Chinese airports, including Hangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, Chengdu, and Beijing Capital, as well as Singapore Changi, surpassing the 100/20 Mbps benchmark. However, only Hangzhou achieved this benchmark for Wi-Fi, whilst Singapore Changi came close with speeds of 96.94 Mbps for download and 114.17 Mbps for upload.
Globally, 21 out of the 48 airports analysed met or exceeded the benchmark for mobile connectivity, whereas only 12 airports did so for Wi-Fi. This disparity highlights the ongoing challenges in achieving consistent high-speed Wi-Fi across major international airports.
The findings underscore the importance of robust connectivity for travellers and the need for airports to enhance their digital infrastructure. As air travel continues to recover post-COVID-19, ensuring reliable and fast internet access remains a priority for both passenger satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Looking ahead, airports may need to invest further in their digital capabilities to meet the growing demand for seamless connectivity, potentially influencing future airport rankings in connectivity performance.
