Singapore unveils tools for AI and data protection

Newsflash Asia

- July 8, 2025

Singapore has launched three significant initiatives to bolster data protection and the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence (AI). Announced at the Personal Data Protection Summit 2025 by Minister Josephine Teo, these initiatives include the Global AI Assurance Sandbox, a Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) adoption guide, and a new Singapore Standard for Data Protection Trustmark (DPTM).

The Global AI Assurance Sandbox, developed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and AI Verify Foundation, expands on its pilot phase to include new AI archetypes and risks. This initiative provides a safe environment for organisations to test AI applications, aiming to inform policy guidance and develop accreditation for testers. The Sandbox also incorporates IMDA’s Starter Kit for Safety Testing of Large Language Models, aligning with Singapore’s risk-based approach to AI.

To facilitate the adoption of PETs, IMDA has introduced a new guide offering resources like the “PETs Use Case Evaluation Tool” and an “Implementation Checklist”. These tools are designed to help businesses evaluate and implement PETs effectively, ensuring secure data sharing and enhanced AI capabilities.

In data protection, the DPTM has been elevated to a new Singapore Standard (SS 714:2025), aligning with global benchmarks. This certification provides organisations with clear data protection requirements, particularly in third-party management and overseas data transfers. The Singapore Accreditation Council will oversee the certification process, ensuring adherence to international standards.

These initiatives underscore Singapore’s commitment to fostering a trusted digital ecosystem, enhancing data protection, and promoting safe AI deployment. The ongoing Personal Data Protection Week 2025 further highlights these efforts, bringing together industry leaders to discuss data protection in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
