A recent study by Commvault reveals a significant gap between perceived and actual cyber resilience among businesses in Asia. The “State of Data Readiness – Asia” report, conducted by Tech Research Asia, shows that whilst 90% of organisations in Singapore and a similar percentage in Malaysia believe they are prepared for cyberattacks, only a third can effectively respond when breaches occur.
The report highlights that 72% of business leaders in Asia expect to recover from a cyber event within five days, with 23% anticipating full recovery in just one day. However, IT leaders report that it typically takes 3-4 weeks to restore even minimal operations. This discrepancy underscores a critical gap in recovery preparedness, with only 30% of organisations testing all mission-critical workloads.
Gareth Russell, Field CTO for APAC, emphasised the importance of embedding resilience into daily operations, stating, “Once a breach occurs, even the most meticulously crafted plans can fall apart.” The study also notes that data volumes in Asia have surged by 40% over the past year, with 63% of organisations operating in hybrid or multi-cloud environments. Alarmingly, 38% lack full visibility into their cloud systems, hindering effective recovery.
Additionally, the report points out the growing compliance burden, with 52% of organisations subject to at least four regulatory frameworks. Michel Borst, Area Vice President for Asia at Commvault, warned, “Confidence without capability can lead to business failure when the worst happens.”
The findings call for businesses to enhance their cybersecurity maturity through regular testing and compliance readiness to ensure resilience in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
