The third phase of the HSBC-NYAA-ITE Sustainability Initiative has concluded, showcasing the innovative efforts of over 150 students from the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) in Singapore.
In collaboration with nearly 50 businesses, these students developed practical solutions to enhance sustainability practices and reduce carbon emissions. The initiative, launched by HSBC Singapore, the National Youth Achievement Award Council (NYAA), and ITE, aims to foster a greener future by integrating student innovation with real-world business challenges.
At the award ceremony, the top prize was awarded to a team working with BMS Engineering & Trading Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of Daikin Airconditioning Singapore Pte Ltd. The students created a Smart Refrigerant Detector (SRD) that is projected to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 20%, potentially avoiding 5,097 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. This project exemplifies the initiative’s goal of translating student innovation into measurable environmental and business benefits.
Other notable projects included a collaboration with Wholesome Savour, which resulted in the “Kindness Meat” burger, a plant-based alternative with a 94% lower carbon footprint than traditional beef burgers. Wholesome Savour plans to incorporate this student-developed solution into their menu and has expressed interest in hiring the student developers.
The initiative not only provides students with practical industry experience but also opens future employment opportunities. HSBC Singapore CEO noted the significant impact of youth innovation in tackling real-world challenges, whilst ITE CEO highlighted the role of technical education in driving environmental innovation. As the initiative progresses, it continues to empower the next generation of green leaders and support businesses in their transition towards a net-zero future.
