Indian travellers are increasingly exploring Southeast Asia, driven by relaxed visa policies in the region, according to Singapore-headquartered Agoda. The digital travel platform’s data shows a significant rise in accommodation searches by Indian passport holders for destinations with eased entry requirements. Malaysia, which introduced visa-free entry for Indians in 2023, saw a 47% year-on-year increase in searches, with Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, and Highlands being popular choices.
Palau, a lesser-known destination, experienced a 49% increase in interest following its visa-free entry announcement. The Philippines, a favourite for beach holidays, recorded a 26% rise in searches, with Manila, Palawan, and Cebu attracting the most attention. Sri Lanka also benefited from its decision to grant visa-free access, seeing a 9% increase in interest, particularly in Mirissa and Nuwara Eliya.
Gaurav Malik, Country Director for India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal at Agoda, commented, “The easing of visa restrictions across Southeast Asia is a welcome move that resonates strongly with Indian travellers. As barriers to entry fall, we’re seeing a direct impact on travel interest and planning.”
Agoda, part of Booking Holdings, offers over 5 million holiday properties and 130,000 flight routes, making travel more accessible for Indian tourists. With the new visa policies, Indian travellers are set to explore both popular and hidden gems in Southeast Asia.
