Malaysians prioritise maintaining independence amid caregiving pressures

Malaysians are increasingly prioritising independence as a key aspect of their legacy, according to the Manulife Asia Care Survey 2026. The survey, which included responses from over 9,000 individuals across Asia, with 1,000 from Malaysia, highlights a shift towards valuing self-reliance, good health, and financial security as essential components of a meaningful legacy.

The survey findings indicate that nearly 90% of Malaysian respondents see preserving independence and self-reliance as their primary goal for longevity. This perspective extends beyond financial means, encompassing the ability to make personal decisions and access quality care without relying on others. Four in five respondents, particularly younger adults aged 25 to 34, view maintaining their independence and financial security as a significant legacy for their families.

Health emerges as a crucial foundation for independence, with 85% of respondents believing that preventive healthcare and positive self-care habits are vital for preserving autonomy. Common self-care practices include staying physically active, eating well, and engaging in hobbies. However, only 27% have undertaken preventive screenings, highlighting an area for improvement.

Financial preparedness remains a concern, with 70% of Malaysians worried about funding future care needs. Respondents estimate a requirement of RM4,760 per month for future care, with younger adults anticipating higher costs. Most plan to rely on personal savings, investments, and insurance rather than financial support from children.

Manulife Malaysia CEO Vibha Coburn emphasised the importance of planning for longer lives, stating, “It is also about living healthier and staying financially secure, so that they can maintain their independence for longer.” The survey underscores the need for accessible planning solutions to help Malaysians balance family responsibilities whilst preparing for a secure future.
