Sembcorp Industries has announced the commencement of operations for its 600MW hydrogen-ready combined-cycle gas turbine power plant on Jurong Island, Singapore. This development follows the completion of market registration and the attainment of full Generation Registered Facility status from Singapore’s Energy Market Company.
The new plant enhances Sembcorp’s capacity to deliver reliable power to support Singapore’s expanding economy and digital infrastructure. Designed with flexibility, the facility can incorporate low-carbon fuels in the future. Sembcorp’s total gas-fired and renewables portfolio in Singapore now stands at 5.7GW, supporting the power needs of the nation’s data centre and semiconductor sectors. Additionally, the company is exploring over 2GW of regional renewable energy import opportunities to diversify Singapore’s energy mix.
Koh Chiap Khiong, President and CEO of Gas and Related Services and CEO of Singapore at Sembcorp, stated, “This new capacity strengthens our ability to power Singapore’s AI-driven growth and enhance the nation’s energy resilience.” The plant is fully contracted under long-term arrangements, ensuring reliable power delivery whilst aiding Singapore’s energy transition.
Daisuke Muraoka, Managing Director and CEO of JEL, highlighted the collaboration with Sembcorp and Mitsubishi Power in overcoming project complexities. Akihiro Ondo, Managing Director and CEO of Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific, expressed satisfaction with the project’s completion, emphasising the role of their gas turbine technology in efficient power generation.
Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of the Energy Market Authority, noted that the plant’s additional capacity bolsters Singapore’s power supply reliability and security, aligning with efforts to decarbonise the sector.
