Nexstrom, a Singapore-based semiconductor company, has successfully raised US$12m in a seed funding round led by Xora Innovation, with contributions from Foothill Ventures and SEEDS. This funding, which brings the company’s total capital to US$15m, will accelerate the commercialisation of its wafer-scale 2D semiconductor platform. The platform is set to achieve the industry’s first 12-inch 2D wafer growth using production-ready manufacturing tools.
As the demand for faster, energy-efficient computing increases, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, Nexstrom is pioneering the development of 12-inch single-crystal 2D semiconductor materials. These materials promise precise electron control and reduced energy loss at the transistor level, whilst remaining compatible with existing advanced foundry manufacturing processes. This innovation aims to bypass the limitations of silicon, which is nearing its physical limits in semiconductor applications.
Dr. Lance Li, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist at Nexstrom, highlighted the necessity for a new materials platform to continue scaling performance in the semiconductor industry. “Silicon has fuelled decades of computing innovation, but the industry now needs a new materials platform to continue scaling performance,” he stated.
Nexstrom’s approach integrates proprietary chemical vapour deposition hardware and process technology into existing workflows, facilitating the growth of continuous, single-crystal 2D materials across standard 12-inch wafers. This positions Nexstrom to lead the transition to post-silicon computing, with the new funding supporting further platform development and strategic collaborations with semiconductor foundries.
The company is also expanding its engineering and leadership teams to advance the development of high-performance, low-power chips for AI, data centres, and future computing applications.
