Singapore launches AI challenge to boost robotics

The National Robotics Programme (NRP), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), PINE Lab@NTU, and Micron Technology have announced the launch of the Singapore Embodied AI Challenge for Manufacturing. This is Singapore’s first national competition focused on advancing embodied artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics through real-world industry challenges. The competition, which is among the first globally to be built around a real-world use case provided by an industry partner, aims to translate promising solutions into practical manufacturing applications.

Micron Technology, serving as the Title Sponsor, and Infineon Technologies as an Event Sponsor, are backing the competition, which features a semiconductor manufacturing challenge. Participants will develop embodied AI solutions to meet real-world industrial requirements, with a prize pool of S$88,000, including a top prize of S$50,000. The finals will be held at RoboSG! 2027 on 20 March 2027, and registration is currently open.

Participants will utilise a robotic embodiment platform to perform tasks such as component removal and reassembly within a 3D mock-up chamber developed by Micron. This challenge aligns with Singapore’s strengths in advanced manufacturing and aims to enhance embodied AI technologies in industrial environments. Joshua Lee, Corporate Vice President at Micron Technology, stated, “At Micron, we believe AI can unlock new possibilities by accelerating intelligence and expanding human potential.”

The competition supports Singapore’s ambition to become a global proving ground for robotics and embodied AI, fostering collaboration among researchers, industry partners, and global talent. Tung Meng Fai, Executive Director of NRP, emphasised the competition’s role in accelerating the translation of cutting-edge technologies into deployment-ready solutions.

The challenge begins with an online simulation phase, running until 31 December 2026, followed by the onsite finals. It is open to teams worldwide, including students, engineers, and AI researchers, with a strong encouragement for collaborations between academia and industry. Registration details are available at nrp.gov.sg/SGEAIchallenge.
