WWF-Singapore has partnered with Great Eastern to develop insurance solutions for nature-based carbon projects in Southeast Asia. Announced at WWF-Singapore’s 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 26 October, the initiative seeks to mitigate investment risks and draw private capital into conservation efforts. The insurance products will cover risks such as project failure, non-delivery of carbon credits, and climate-related events, and will be piloted in priority landscapes supported by Canopy, WWF-Singapore’s flagship nature finance facility.
The collaboration forms part of a broader strategy unveiled by WWF-Singapore to advance conservation efforts across the region. The gala, attended by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, highlighted Singapore’s biodiversity journey and the role of technology, finance, and partnerships in conservation. Chew Sutat, CEO of WWF-Singapore, emphasised the need to harness Singapore’s strengths in innovation and partnerships to accelerate conservation and climate solutions across Southeast Asia.
Key initiatives include the WWF Earth Labs, a new space for conservation science and community engagement, and the WWF-NSAS Space for Nature Challenge, which leverages satellite technology for ecosystem monitoring. These efforts aim to protect biodiversity and support communities dependent on nature across Southeast Asia.
WWF-Singapore has mobilised resources to safeguard over 4.4 million hectares of critical habitats and engaged over 1,200 citizen-science volunteers in biodiversity monitoring. As it enters its third decade, WWF-Singapore plans to continue leveraging innovation, science, and partnerships to enhance conservation impact in the region.
