The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore has approved MSD’s CAPVAXIVE® (Pneumococcal 21-valent Conjugate Vaccine) for adults aged 18 and older. This vaccine aims to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia caused by specific Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes. The approval introduces a new option for pneumococcal vaccination in Singapore, addressing changes in the serotype distribution of adult invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD).
CAPVAXIVE® is designed to protect against 21 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae, offering a combined serotype coverage of 78% for those previously vaccinated with other pneumococcal vaccines. The vaccine’s approval follows its earlier acceptance in the US, Canada, and Australia, reflecting its global recognition.
Pneumococcal disease poses significant health risks, particularly for older adults and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes and chronic lung disease. The disease can lead to severe complications, including organ damage and death. Dr Ivan Su of MSD Asia Pacific highlighted the vaccine’s development, stating, “The HSA approval reflects the scientific approach behind CAPVAXIVE®, which demonstrated immunogenicity against the vaccine serotypes across the adult populations studied.”
Healthcare professionals in Singapore emphasise the importance of vaccination and preventive care. Dr Leong Hoe Nam from Rophi Clinic noted the critical role of healthcare providers in safeguarding public health through timely vaccination. Adj Prof See Kay Choong from the National University Hospital warned of the severe complications associated with IPD, whilst Dr Sharon Ngoh from Parkway Shenton stressed the importance of preventive care amidst Singapore’s ageing population.
CAPVAXIVE® is now available for administration by healthcare providers in Singapore, offering an additional layer of protection against pneumococcal disease for eligible adults.
